Tips for at-home speech practice

Kids deserve to be understood.

Have you noticed any of the following?

  • Your child’s speech is difficult for others to understand or sounds “baby-ish.”

  • Your child can’t say as many speech sounds as his or her peers.

  • Your child has been in speech therapy in the past but still has some residual speech sound errors.

Children deserve the ability to communicate their needs, wants, feelings, and ideas clearly and confidently wherever they are. Speech therapy can help.

 Here’s how it works.

  • 1. Get a call.

We’ll start with an open, no-pressure conversation or free screening to determine the concerns regarding your child’s speech and whether a speech evaluation and therapy are the right remedies.

  • 2. Get a plan.

If your child doesn’t already have a speech-language evaluation from the last 12 months, we’ll start there. Once we have the results, we’ll develop a plan personalized for your child’s needs.

  • 3. Get results.

With regular therapy attendance and practice outside therapy sessions, we’re confident your child’s speech will become clearer, and he or she will be able to communicate more effectively and with greater confidence!

 Let’s get to work!

  • Mundy Speech Therapy was recently credentialed with Optima and Anthem commercial insurance plans. Mundy Speech Therapy can also provide parents with a "superbill" to submit to their insurance company for possible reimbursement. Additionally, clients may be eligible to use funds from a healthcare flexible spending account. FSA (flexible spending account) and HSA (health savings account) cards are accepted. Checking with the health plan administrator to determine whether or not speech-language therapy services are covered is highly recommended before beginning the therapy process.

  • Payments/co-payments for services are due at the time of service. A credit, FSA, or HSA card can be placed on file in the Client Portal, which will then be charged after the child attends a therapy session. Or, payment can be made by cash or check at the therapy session.

  • Insurance coverage/co-payments/deductibles vary based on a client’s plan.

Private-pay therapy rate is $90; a discount for prompt (i.e., same-day) payment is available.
Costs of evaluations vary from $200 to $400 based on the scope of the evaluation. Cost of evaluation will be finalized before the start of the evaluation.

  • Under the “No Surprises Act” you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance, or who are not using insurance, an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including speech-language assessment/therapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency health care services, including speech-language assessment/therapy services. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

  • Evaluations and screenings are conducted in person at the Mundy Speech Therapy office on Jamestown Road. Individual therapy sessions can be completed in person or online (for Virginia residents) through a HIPAA-compliant platform. Online sessions can also be used occasionally instead of missing a session.

  • After the initial evaluation is complete, the SLP and the parent will work together to determine appropriate goals for the child. Data related to the child’s goals will be taken over the course of 12 therapy sessions, and a written progress report will be completed at the end of 12 sessions.

  • Parents are welcome and encouraged to come into therapy sessions with their child. Speech therapy sessions are similar to music or sports lessons in that practice is required outside of therapy sessions in order to make the quickest progress. The SLP will talk with the parent at the beginning and/or end of therapy sessions to provide materials and suggestions for practice at home.

  • Through a HIPAA-compliant practice portal. Intake documents can be completed through the portal before the first appointment. The system also has the ability to send appointment reminders.

  • If the child’s primary issue is language, that child would be referred to another clinic. Often children who have language deficits have been identified by a school-based SLP, and may be receiving services at school to address those needs. If sentence structure (syntax) or word structure (morphology) are issues, those are areas that could be addressed in the context of working on the child’s speech sounds.

  • School-based speech-language pathologists serve children with disabilities through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or Individualized Service Plan (ISP). These services are required by and paid for by the federal government, under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004). In order for a child to qualify for school-based services, three criteria must be met. There must be the presence of a disability; the disability must have a negative educational impact on the child; and the child must require specially designed instruction to access the curriculum. So, if a child has difficulty producing a sound(s), but there is no educational impact, then the child would not qualify for school-based services. However, the child could work on his/her error sound(s) in private speech-language therapy. Private speech-language therapy could also be used as a supplement to the therapy services the child is already receiving at school.

Hi, I’m Heather.

As a parent, I know that the last thing parents want to see is their children struggling. We’ll do just about anything to prevent it, won’t we? Fortunately, speech sound errors can be corrected with therapy and practice!

Just don’t wait. The earlier the intervention, the more successful the results.

I can’t wait to get to know your family!

  • I received a B.S. in Business summa cum laude from Wake Forest University and an M.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I hold a certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP) through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), an Award for Continuing Education (ACE) from ASHA, and a speech-language pathology license through the Virginia Department of Health Professions Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Following 10 years of working with students in schools in Vancouver, British Columbia and Williamsburg, Virginia, I opened my practice to focus on treating speech sound disorders while working closely with children and their families.

In addition to seeing children reach their speech-language goals and gain confidence in their communication, I enjoy reading, running, listening to podcasts, and going to the beach with my family.
